Gom Jabbar
One hand inside a box. A needle beside the neck.
Gom Jabbar is not the name of the test’s box: it is the poisoned needle held against the neck. The box produces pain; the needle threatens death if the hand is withdrawn. With this arrangement, Mohiam tests whether Paul can control his immediate impulse to escape.
The scene reveals the Bene Gesserit definition of “human.” Yet this definition need not be read as the novel’s unquestionable verdict: it also raises questions about training, an elitist institution, and measurement through violence. In Children of Dune, Jessica’s memory of Mohiam, the poisoned needle, and the pain box echoes the test in the next generation.
