Crysknife

Made from a sandworm’s tooth, the crysknife is more than a weapon in the Fremen world. Who may see it, carry it, and use it determines the community’s boundaries. In Jessica’s encounter with Mapes, the knife becomes a test of recognition and belief.

In Dune Messiah, Chani’s hand gesture of a crysknife shows that the object can also live as a gesture. References to knives in museums and family collections in God Emperor of Dune invite reflection on a living tradition becoming a historical remnant. The object may remain; the world that gives it meaning may change.
