Despite orders to bear a daughter, she has a son with Leto. When she becomes a Fremen Reverend Mother, Alia in her womb also undergoes an awakening of memory. She bears a tension between the breeding program, personal love, and motherhood that has no easy resolution.

He is the target of a trap laid by the Emperor and the Harkonnens. He attempts to kill the Baron using a poison tooth supplied by Dr. Yueh; Piter dies in the attack, while the Baron survives. His memory influences Paul and loyalty to the House.

He is known for his personal anger toward the Harkonnens, his devotion, and his poetic side as a baliset player. His suspicion of Jessica shows the confusion created by the House’s defeat. He later continues to serve the Atreides legacy.

Duke Leto's security and strategy expert.

Forced into Harkonnen service after the defeat. Dependence on poison and misinformation show how a great analytical talent can be exploited when its data are incomplete. He refuses to kill Paul.

Jessica’s daughter, opened to Other Memory before birth.

She kills the Baron in the first novel. In the later era, her power and personality conflict with ancestral pressure within her. As the Baron’s memory gains strength, she loses the boundaries of her self; in Children of Dune, she chooses her own death.

Son of Paul and Chani and the architect of the Golden Path.

He merges with sandtrout, beginning a human-worm transformation. During his millennia of rule, he controls spice, movement, and bloodlines. Falling into water after Siona and Duncan’s attack releases the sandtrout within his body and begins a new cycle.

The daughter of Paul and Chani; one of the pre-born.

She develops protective methods against her inner memory. Convincing herself that Leto has died during his transformation keeps the plan secret. Her bond with Farad'n is important to the continuation of the later Atreides line.

The daughter of Shaddam IV and Paul's political wife.

She takes part in the conspiracy against Paul and delays Chani's ability to have children. She later changes her allegiance and takes responsibility for caring for the twins. Through her work as a historian, the books' epigraphs also reveal how events are narrated afterward.

A leader who ruthlessly exploits Arrakis’s resources and dynastic power.

He cooperates with the Emperor to destroy the Atreides. As Jessica’s father, he is Paul’s grandfather. Death does not completely end his influence: his personality within Alia’s inner memory becomes a political threat in the third book.

The Baron's nephew, central to his political plans for the future.

He is meant to be presented as a more acceptable leader after Rabban's harsh rule. His final duel with Paul turns the rivalry between Houses into a personal encounter of life and death.

A scientist standing between the Fremen ecological project and imperial duty.

He continues his father Pardot's dream of transforming the planet. He helps the Atreides; when he is left to die in the desert, the personal and planetary limits of ecological knowledge become visible.

The Atreides' conditioned physician.

The Harkonnens blackmail him through what has been done to his wife, Wanna. While betraying the House, he leaves Paul and Jessica the means to escape and tries to give the Duke an opportunity to kill the Baron. His betrayal is more complex than voluntary disloyalty.

She protects the breeding program and the Sisterhood's political interests. Her inability to control Paul's rise exposes the institution's helplessness before conditions it helped create.

An actor in the conspiracy against Paul in Dune Messiah; a bearer of the Tleilaxu legacy in the sixth book.

He aims to unlock the recovery of memory through Hayt. In his much later ghola existence, his secretly preserved cell samples carry the potential to recreate many people. His roles in the two eras do not occupy the same social position.

Moneo's daughter and a rebel against Leto's order.

She carries the ability to evade prescient tracking, the result of Leto's long breeding program. In her desert ordeal, she experiences the threat the Golden Path addresses, yet still rejects his tyranny. Together with Duncan, she brings about Leto's end.

Leto's close official who sustains his rule, and Siona's father.

The tension between his past rebellion and present service reveals Leto's method of transforming people. He knows intimately both the danger of the worm within the Emperor's body and the daily burden of power.

A person raised by Ix within a no-chamber, capable of reaching Leto.

Her compassion and sensitivity connect with Leto's repressed humanity. Being the product of a political project does not make her feelings simply false. She falls victim to the attack alongside Leto.

An extraordinary military commander in the Sisterhood's service.

He takes responsibility for Duncan's protection and training. Torture awakens new powers of speed and perception. He makes a final diversionary stand on Rakis; in the sixth book, he returns as a child ghola.

The leader at the center of Sisterhood politics in the final two novels.

She is Teg's daughter. Her bond with Sheeana and her reading of Leto's message on Rakis allow her to examine her traditions critically. In confronting the Honored Matres, she opens a new organizational path through Murbella.

Raised as an Honored Matre, she later undergoes Bene Gesserit training.

Her attempt to imprint Duncan creates a mutual dependence. Combining the two disciplines enables her to lead the union of Honored Matres and Bene Gesserit. This choice takes her away from a shared life with Duncan.

She attracts the Sisterhood's attention through her ability to direct sandworms on Rakis.

Her ability becomes the focus of religious and political projects. In the sixth book, she departs with Duncan in the no-ship instead of following the united Sisterhood's path; the worms and the possibility of a different future go with her.

A Sister involved in Duncan's training who later carries the memories of Lampadas.

She rescues the memories of many Reverend Mothers from the destroyed Lampadas. Her transfer to Rebecca allows those experiences to endure even after she herself is killed.

By receiving the memories of Lampadas from Lucilla, she preserves a great cultural heritage. The existence of a hidden Jewish community also reveals historical continuities beyond the principal powers.

Two elderly figures Duncan sees, who speak to each other in the final scene.

Their conversation connects them with Face Dancers who have become independent of their Masters and accumulate others' personalities. Duncan's escape evades their net. The first six novels do not definitively explain all their aims and history.

The ruler of the known Imperium before Paul's rise.

He considers the growing Atreides influence a threat and supports the Harkonnen attack with Sardaukar. He loses his throne to Paul's Fremen strength and spice leverage; his daughter Irulan enters the political marriage of the new order.

The nephew to whom the Baron entrusts the rule of Arrakis.

His brutality and relentless depletion of resources earn the people's hatred. The Baron intends to present Feyd-Rautha as a savior after him, but the Fremen rise exceeds this political calculation.

He directs his intellectual superiority toward ruthless ends. His desire to possess Jessica is part of the plans. He dies in Duke Leto's poison-tooth attack; Hawat is subsequently forced into Harkonnen service.

The principal architect of the plan to transform Arrakis; Liet's father.

His ecological observations become a shared Fremen goal lasting generations. His project rests on the idea that small interventions can produce planetary consequences. The first novel's ecology appendix recounts his history.

The Navigator involved in the conspiracy against Paul.

His prescience helps conceal the other conspirators from Paul's vision. His life within a spice-filled tank shows how strategic privilege comes with bodily dependence.

Irulan's nephew; a young man important to the future of the Corrino line.

He changes under Jessica's training and distances himself from his mother Wensicia's plot against the twins. His future relationship with Ghanima is tied to the continuation of the Atreides line; formal power and biological inheritance diverge.

The strategist leading the Sisterhood in Heretics of Dune.

Her plan involving Duncan, Sheeana, and Rakis is connected to the search for release from Leto's lingering influence. After her death, her memory and the burden of her plans pass to Odrade.

He protects the near-immortality of ghola continuity and the secrets of melange production. His negotiations with Odrade illustrate how the Sisterhood gains political advantage by reading the other side's beliefs.

She concerns herself with archives, calculation, and institutional continuity. Her objections to Odrade's intuitive risk-taking show that the Sisterhood does not speak with a single voice.
