A symbol takes the place of a person.

Paul's success does not arise solely from his individual abilities. Beliefs and political conditions give him a ready-made meaning.

The narratives planted by the Missionaria Protectiva give Jessica and Paul a language and a means of protection in the Fremen world. But these prepared myths do not remain passive tools. People's hopes, suffering, and collective action give them new life.

The name Muad'Dib no longer denotes Paul alone, but an authority through which soldiers, priests, and the government legitimize themselves. Dune Messiah opens after the hero's rise: the measure of victory conflicts with the human cost of the wars fought in his name.

Herbert's focus is not a single malicious leader. It is how even a well-intentioned, powerful, perceptive person can become the center of a catastrophe amid mass worship. The distinction between leader and institution is therefore decisive.
