The trap of prescience

Knowing the future does not mean being able to escape it.

Paul's vision does not work like an omniscient narrator's definitive map. There are possibilities, blind spots, and paths closed off by choices.

When the foreseen future becomes the reason for action, it can become a self-fulfilling path. As Paul avoids one catastrophe, he narrows other routes; his individual will is not the same as the movement of the religion and state established in his name.

His ability to navigate by prescience after losing his eyes in Dune Messiah gives this problem concrete form. Seeing is no longer a function of the eye; yet events outside the line he has foreseen expose the limits of his apparent mastery.

Other prescient beings such as Edric, no-chambers, and Siona's hereditary trait create different kinds of blind spots. They do not share a single mechanism. Their common result is that the future cannot be wholly enclosed within one field of vision.
