Water, worms, and spice belong to the same story.

Dune's desert is not a backdrop. Ecology determines the foundations of production and power.

Sandtrout sequester water; as free water diminishes, desert conditions persist. Sandworms and spice production depend on this cycle. Water is fatal to an adult worm, yet essential to a human. Different forms of life have conflicting needs on the same planet.

Pardot and Liet-Kynes's project turns the Fremen's communal water storage into an ecological program spanning generations. The dream is to make the planet habitable; yet increasing water reduces the worms' habitat and therefore the spice.

In Chapterhouse: Dune, the transformation runs in the opposite direction. A planet's gardens give way to desert to restore the worm cycle. What must be saved is not just a species, but the entire economic and political future bound to it.
