Frank Herbert's sixth book does not settle every question. Its final scene opens onto a new unknown.

As Duncan, Sheeana, and their companions escape in the no-ship, they move beyond planned paths. The cellular heritage Scytale carries and the worms aboard also bring possibilities of recreating the past into this journey.

Daniel and Marty's conversation connects them to Face Dancers who have accumulated personalities and become independent of their Masters. But no completed final account explains their entire role in the universe.

This study draws its boundaries at Frank Herbert's six novels. Explanations in the sequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson belong to a separate body of work. Remaining faithful to the sources means not presenting what is unresolved here as settled.
