Overview
In The Butlerian Jihad, Serena is Viceroy Butler’s daughter. The chronology in The Machine Crusade dates Erasmus’s murder of her son to 201 Before Guild; the atomic attack on Earth follows the next year.
Place in the universe
An individual loss becomes the shared symbol of a long war. Serena’s story is not the same biography as the Jehanne Butler account in McNelly’s encyclopedia; the atlas presents these two origins as separate source traditions.
