Overview
In chapter three of The Machine Crusade, Iblis interprets an incomplete prophecy as announcing the end of humanity’s time of suffering. The objection that the prophecy remains incomplete does not change the direction of his speech.
Place in the universe
This scene shows how the language of belief can be used to legitimize a historical struggle. In the atlas’s interpretation, what matters here is less the truth of the words than their power to mobilize a community.
