Sareer
The last desert within a green Arrakis during the reign of Leto II.
A remnant on a transformed planet
The opening of God Emperor of Dune does not present Arrakis as the unbroken desert world of the first novel. Forest scents, water, and warm summer air suggest that the Sareer now lies within a different environment. The phrase “last desert” captures the scale of change in a single place-name.
Two sides of a boundary
The breeze from the Sareer and the air from the Kynes Sea beyond it appear in the same scene. Aridity and water are adjacent conditions on one planet, rather than the worlds of separate novels.
Reading note
Viewing the Sareer simply as an area to mark on a map is insufficient. This remnant invites us to read the realization of the ecological project alongside the new order of power it produced. The atlas’s drawing shows this contrast; it makes no claim about boundaries or surface area.
