Castle Caladan
Young Leto’s home; the castle where family memory and local life meet in House Atreides.
A House tells its own story
Actors from the town below the castle prepare for the annual dynastic play. The ceremony is more than entertainment: local people perform the story the Atreides tell about themselves.
The surroundings that make a home
Leto’s memories of damp, salty air, misty mornings, and afternoon rain extend his home beyond the boundaries of a building. The castle is remembered together with its surrounding climate and everyday life.
Comparison with the desert
The Caladan file can be used to explore the environmental dimension of the move to Arrakis. Moving from a place where water is ordinary and abundant to a world where every loss is counted also means changing one’s habits.
