A reference work written from within the universe, including its disputes.
Overview
The introduction frames the book as the product of different scholars studying the archives found at Dar-es-Balat and the documents Leto left behind. This distinguishes the actual publication date from the narrator’s position within the universe.
Place in the universe
Frank Herbert’s foreword welcomes the work, but also notes that some contributions draw on disputed sources and that he reserves his own judgment on subjects to be explored in the novels. The atlas therefore does not give encyclopedia details the same label as established information from the original novels.
