The face of an exploitative order
The Baron’s relationship with Arrakis is built on the power and revenue provided by spice. In his calculations, people are elements to be used, frightened, or set against one another. The attack on the Atreides brings personal enmity and the empire’s economic order together at one point.
Bloodline within enmity
Being Jessica’s father complicates the distinction between Atreides and Harkonnen at the family level. Paul and Alia also carry the bloodline of the House apparently opposing them. This does not make the characters morally equivalent; it suggests that ancestry need not determine personal choice.
The threat after death
The Baron is killed by Alia in the first novel. His presence in Children of Dune is not physical resurrection: he gains power through his personality in Alia’s ancestral memory. An external enemy becoming an internal voice turns Harkonnen influence into a threat to selfhood as well as politics.
