Overview
This story in Sands of Dune places young Mapes in a Fremen operation aboard a Harkonnen spice harvester. Her disguise as a worker, the noise of the harvesting machine, and the danger of an approaching worm all play a role in the same scene.
Place in the universe
Mapes’s thoughts about the water lost with blood show that even violence is inseparable from the desert’s material conditions. The story is an expanded-universe addition to the past of the older Mapes in Dune.
