Gilbertus Albans
The human child raised by Erasmus; the personal side of the human–machine relationship.
Overview
In the omnibus edition’s account of The Machine Crusade, Erasmus chooses Gilbertus’s name for him. The child’s disobedience and habit of breaking things challenge the robot’s claim to predict human behavior.
Place in the universe
This beginning shows that education is more than transmitting instructions. The conflict between Erasmus’s desire for control and the child’s will opens a window onto the background of the expanded universe’s institutions of mental training.
