Humanity after machines
After the Butlerian Jihad, machines that imitate the human mind are excluded. Some humans therefore come to take the place of infrastructure themselves.
Traces in the text
Mentats train for calculation and strategic inference; Guild Navigators for finding safe passage; and Bene Gesserit for advanced control of body and mind. As human ability expands, expertise also becomes an institutional monopoly.
Relationships and consequences
This world is not without technology. Shields, suspensors, spacecraft, and genetic production persist. The boundary between prohibition and practice is continually tested, especially by Ixian innovation.
A suggested reading
In later eras, new navigation devices and no-ships reduce old dependencies. Yet the question remains whether a technical solution will create a new concentration of power. Replacing a machine with a human does not guarantee that control disappears.
QUESTION FOR REFLECTIONDoes banning a technology also disperse the power built on it?
