The Scattering and the unknown
The Scattering is not a single expedition. It is the vast expansion of human communities beyond the old Imperium's sphere of control.
Traces in the text
The famine and need for movement following Leto's long order drive people far afield. It is no longer possible to know, count, or encompass all the dispersed societies in a single future. The security sought by the Golden Path is connected to this multiplicity.
Relationships and consequences
Returning to the Old Empire does not simply restore the past. The Honored Matres, new Face Dancers, and Futars bear traces of different forms of organization and biology that have developed beyond it.
A suggested reading
Yet the outside remains incompletely explained. At the end of the first six books, the details of some threats and powers remain open. This account does not close that uncertainty with answers drawn from later authors' novels.
QUESTION FOR REFLECTIONDoes security come from seeing everyone, or from no one being able to see everyone?
